In 2015, the world began to end. It started with a new virus being discovered in Africa. The virus spread at an unprecedented rate, quickly becoming a global pandemic. The infected were taken to hospitals and quarantined. Hospitals are filled to breaking point, and emergency quarantines are set up.
Six months pass, and no cure can be found. Eventually, the infected begin to suffer from several mental illnesses, such as paranoid-schizophrenia and dementia.
In the January of 2016, all of the infected turn violent, possessing much more strength and stamina than an average human. In most cases, they use their hands and teeth to kill, though some wield bats, knives, and even guns.
Eight years pass, and civilisation is almost wiped out.
Across the world, survivors band together in the countryside, where there are few infected, and set up their own governments, settlements and towns.
In Russia, the towns quickly find that they cannot survive without scavengers entering what are widely referred to as ‘red zones’, population centres where the infected roam in hoards numbering in the thousands. The few volunteers who went out into these zones and survived, quickly became heroes and survival experts. Some held loyalties to a certain town, and would scavenge for that town exclusively, while others would travel to different towns and accept contracts to find goods, usually essentials such as ammo and medicines.
Scavengers operate by a strict code, a set of unwritten rules that all of them understand.
1) Do not kill another scavenger unless under threat.
2) Bury or burn the bodies of scavengers, and spread the word of their death.
3) Always mark newly found dead zones and re-spray worn markings.
Zones:
There are four types of zone, ranging in danger.
Green: Countryside, safe. Location of settlements.
Yellow: Smaller towns or the outskirts of cities. Dangerous for inexperienced scavengers.
Red: inner city, very dangerous, even for experienced scavengers.
Dead Zones: Dead Zones are some of the most dangerous places a person can go. They are often filled with infected. Areas include: Disease Quarantine Zones and military bases. Only the best enter a dead zone and live.
A wandering Scavenger’s name is something that they tell no one. Every single person they interact with is likely to die, either from attack or the weather, and they go by pseudonyms to keep attachments from growing.
