| There has been a few discussions going around recently about characters, especially in the HRP, surviving everything.
Me and Kristy were chatting and came up with a simple solution.
Dice rolls!
It's simple. Whenever you are engaged in combat and some thing is used against you that would harm you, you roll a dice.
Kristy's example is great. Every situation is different, and it's up to the writer to choose the numbers of the dice roll, as long as they keep it realistic. In a straight out firefight, odds of getting hit would be lower than the odds of being hit if a sniper took a shot at you.
This way, your character can still survive everything, but it adds a sense of realism too. This idea would also mean that the RP would be kept fresh with new characters, and that people wouldn't overdevelop things and then get bored. It would make people think more about their writing if they didnt wish to risk losing a character and so we'd create a better standard of RP-ing.

| Here's a brief example of how this'd work:
Sasha moved silently through the remains of the ruined building, which might have once been an apartment block. Her head was pounding from the lack of sleep she'd had, but she kept moving regardless, as staying still alone and behind enemy lines would be suicide. She had no idea if her squad had even survived the drop, but she couldn't abandon them.
(This part would be done by the DM or an enemy player) The Sangheli sniped watched the ODST through his scope, the crosshair resting over her. He waited, making sure he had her pace correct, and fired his shot.
Here's a list of possible outcomes of this: 1 : Headshot, instant kill 2-3 : Major wound 4-6 : Minor wound 6-10 : Miss

| Sasha caught sight of a slight glow through one of the windows, and barely noticed the sniper in time. Throwing herself to the ground as the beam of energy flew towards her, she felt a burning sensation in her arm as it was grazed by the sniper's fire.
Other outcomes of this would be: Headshot: Sasha is KIA, and nothing can bring her back. Major Wound: Sasha is alive, but is badly wounded. She needs medical attention or she'll die. Miss: Sasha is perfectly unharmed, but is also aware of the sniper. | |

| No. We've never in the past done this because it fucks people over, it takes forever, and it looks like shit. If you want to kill characters without the writer's permission, set up an RP where that's the case. Don't try to hijack that shit into one that doesn't have that so you can kill people off.
Addendum: Xazhi is an impulsive and unfair shithead who's only goal is to piss people off. Ad. 2: :clown:

| I've stated in the chat.
As an edit to this. The options for the dice roll are left up to the writer. There's always going to be a danger clause, but it's up to the writer to decide how far that danger goes.
I personally feel that this will help the writing better itself in the RP's, and I feel the taking longer part shouldn't be too much of an issue once people adjust to doing it. It won't exactly be every post after all. | |

| I prefer success/fail roles as opposed to specifics. Success/fail being hit/miss or true/false or yes/no actions. And not the "I'm going to give you a major wound or a minor wound, or kill you, or completely miss you." and in the latter case, there'd have to be [2] dice rolls, one to determine the act of one player, and the second to determine the act of another, because looking down the scope, the shot fired might make a major/minor wound, but the person could have a "second chance" lucky move or whatever to have that fried shot miss. | |

| So here, the Elite's shot would hit, unless of course, Sasha rolled 6-10 (Probably a lower boundary if the Elite gets a hit, but these are just examples. D10's might not even be the best choice.)
Edit: As to what Skippy said in the first post, the DMs should have the ability to change rolls and boundaries.
For example, a player doesn't put a reasonable* roll down, the DM should be able to tell them to change it.

| The only real issue with these rolls is they could get in the way of any plans people put in place, and considering the populace of this site tend to have plans all laid out, sometimes before an RP even starts, it could become a major roadblock in the course of an RP. | |
