I swing myself and land on a small outcropping opposite Dormii

I'm going to say because you like to have power, control over your life. This is an elevated position, with a beautiful view of the surrounding area. In the mind, height means power or control. So, it's either because you want more control over your life, or you like the view.

Neither. The answer is obvious but not too obvious. It does require you to look though.

I burst through the last bit of jungle and begin to climb the crumbling stone steps

Your partially right, i chose the ridge because i wanted to get a sense of scope from up there.

And hmm, we both know what the UNSC are like. There would be more blood than this.

And more bullet holes. Marines aren't known for their accuracy. Not even ODSTs would be that precise.
