| Magic - Names:
Every person has three names. Their true name, the name they are given and the name they take. The first name is in the Old Language of Magic and is where all magic in that person comes from. The Second name is the name given by parents at birth and the third name is the name that a person takes to protect the given name.
Names have power. Aside from all magic stemming from a person’s true name, if a sorcerer was to find out a person’s true name before they seal it, they could use it to control that person. All free will would be eradicated. The Given name can also be used to control a person’s actions, albeit to a lesser degree. The Taken name protects against this.
The True Name is unknown to a person and there are very few ways to find out what it is. Knowing your true name would allow you to tap into the deepest wells of magical power. You would be akin to a God. A True Name can be sealed once known, to prevent other sorcerers from using it against you. However, this is a very delicate operation that is known to only one being in the world. The Operation itself involves dying firstly. After that, the heart is removed and two symbols are etched into it. The heart is replaced and the person is brought back to life.
Not every person is capable of magic however. Very few are and most people aren’t ever aware of it. The magical community bands together in small groups as such. Each country has it’s own Sanctuary, almost a government for that countries magical populace. The Sanctuary enforces the law that all mortals must never find out about the existence of magic. The Sanctuaries are ruled each by a Council of Elders. Three to be exact, voted in by the magical community at the time. Each serves until they no longer wish to, death meets them or a crime is committed in their name. The term Mortal is actually inaccurate as all sorcerers die. The use of magic slows down the aging process however, leading many sorcerers to look a lot younger than they are. How much is affected by how powerful that persons magic is. - History of Magic:
History of Magic
The first known race to use Magic were the Ancients. Little is known about the Ancients. They were the first to use Magic, and were extremely powerful with it. For years, they worshipped and obeyed the Faceless Ones, but eventually began a revolution, secretly stealing a Black Crystal from the Faceless Ones and crafting the Sceptre of the Ancients, as well as the four God-Killers. They then fought back against the Faceless Ones and banished them from our world. Eventually, without their gods, they began to fight amongst themselves, and the Ancients wiped themselves out.
The Ancients also created the Book of Names. This book held the Three Names of every living person on Earth. It was destroyed by Nefarian Serpine, using the Scepter of the Ancients (Which was also then rendered unusable) some 2 years before the events of this RP.
Prior to 1850, the magical world was thrown into a war by a powerful elementalist named Mevolent. Mevolent’s aim was to take over the mortals and have mages rule over them and to bring back his and his follower’s gods; The Faceless Ones. Mevolent’s Three Generals, Serpine, Baron Vengeous and Lord Vile, as they are known, have all been killed. 75 years have passed since Mevolent’s defeat. One of Mevolent’s greatest enemies was Skulduggery Pleasant. During the war, Nefarian Serpine lured him into a trap and killed him, however, Skulduggery came back as a living skeleton. He is the only person to have ever come back from the dead.
Types of Magic - Elemental Magic:
Elemental- It involves the manipulation of fire, earth, water and air for both offensive and defensive purposes. While Elemental magic is one of the two major magical disciplines, it is less practiced than Adept, most probably due to the difficulty of mastering all four elements. While Adept sorcerers concentrate on developing only one certain type of magic (and maybe combat skills), Elemental practitioners have to divide their attention between fire, earth, air and water.
Fire-The flashiest and most used of the four elements, this power is mostly used to hurl fireballs at foes. Elemental sorcerers create fire in through friction, usually the snapping of fingers However, fire still requires oxygen to be present, and as such, it is not very useful in closed areas. Uses Fire can be utilised to manipulate flames into whatever the user pleases, for example, a wall of fire. Users can envelop their body with fire, and then "throw" streams of it, like a flamethrower. Users can throw fire balls. Focusing fireballs into smaller, more intense flames for cutting and carving.
Water- Water is the most rarely used out of the four elements Uses Walk on water. Used to aid the user when swimming. Create water to disrupt electrical appliances. Manipulate the water vapour in the air. Used in combat. Used to propel the user out of water. To remove all moisture from the outside of your body. Used to manipulate snow or ice.
Air- Air magic is the most versatile and, at times, the most powerful of the four elements. Air magic is the easiest to learn Uses Used to push objects/people. Pull an object/person. Deprive a person of air. Levitation, of the user or of another object/person Air bubble in dust, possibly in water. Read disturbances in the air. Create whirlwirds Crush objects. Squeeze, press, cut, or hold objetcs floating in midair. Containing explosions (like grenades, etc.) by making a sphere of air around them.
Earth- Earth magic is thought to be last resort defensive magic. Uses It turns the user into an unbreakable stone statue for a random amount of time, from anywhere between a few weeks and a few hundred years.

Adept-
Necromancy - Necromancy is the Adept discipline that allows its practitioners to harness the energy of the dead, manipulating it so that they can control darkness and shadows. Necromancers harness the energy of the dead to control shadows and darkness. Some abilities that can be achieved are making them into solid projectiles, shadow blasts, whips and tendrils and many other things.
Symbols - Symbols can be placed either on the body as a tattoo, or drawn on to other objects as well as dirt. The signs can be activated by a series of taps on them, through a sorcerer coming into contact with them, magic being used in their presence etc. The symbols can be used for many different purposes, they can be used as offensive energy attacks, defensive walls, escape methods, and a host of other things, such as making tea.
Bonebreaker - Bonebreaker is a rare type of Adept magic. As its name implies, it allows its users to break bones merely by touching them. This makes it extremely dangerous at close quarters, as even light touches inflict great and possibly fatal injuries. Broken bones tend to shatter completely, meaning that if the bone was protecting a vital organ, the outcome is almost certainly fatal. The main weakness is that the magic is only stored in one part of the body and requires contact with that part of the body to work.
Children of the Spider - The Children of the Spider are a secretive organization of Spider mages lead by the Torment. Its followers utilize a magical ability that allows them to vomit and control spiders and to transform into gigantic spiders. Energy Thrower - Energy-Throwing is a type of Adept magic that allows users to fire energy blasts from their hands.The color of the energy varies.The users charge before firing.
Dimensional Shunter - A Dimensional Shunter is someone who can send people to different realities. Dimensional Shunters rarely shunt themselves, as it is incredibly rare to find a frequency to a new dimension to shunt to that has a livable environment for humans, and it is impossible to know anything about the dimension until you are there. Shunters are also able to move things to other places in the current dimension, or send things to other dimensions without going themselves. A Dimensional Shunter can also cast an echoing shunt on other people, by touching them in any part of the body and putting some of their magic into it. It has a delayed effect, hence the name, and is able to send the touched person to another dimension at any random time while the energy is building up in them. The person is normally warned when this is about to happen by a throbbing in their touched area, that gradually gets bigger as the shunt gets closer. Before the shunt happens, the person's vision will blur and they will not be able to hear properly. An echo shunt can happen to someone numerous times, depending on how much energy the Shunter put into it. If it happens an odd amount of times, the effected person will not return to their original dimension. Once the shunts energy stops rebounding in the person and runs out, the shunts will cease. Gist - A Gist is a magical body fuelled by the user's hate, anger and determination. When this magic is used, the gist takes the appearance of the user. The appearance of the actual gist is far more animalistic. There are not many Gists in the world. A Gist can only be let out of the user's body for a limited time for two reasons: Due to the fact that using this magic takes a toll on the users body, the Gist is used mostly as a last resort. If a Gist is let out of the user's body for too long, the Gist will take over, causing the user to be trapped inside the Gist, instead of the Gist being trapped inside the user.
Wall Walking - Wall-Walking is a type of Adept magic, which lets the user shift their center of gravity to allow them to walk up or along walls and along ceilings. A large number of Mage assassins use this discipline.
Sensitive - Sensitive magic is, in essence, psychic powers. These are psychic powers that may or may not fall under the branch of Sensitivity: Telepathy Prophecies/Divination/Visions Contact with spirits Psychokinesis (while also meaning telekinesis, the ability to move and levitate things with the mind, it is also an umbrella term for other psionic abilities like pyrokinesis, cryokinesis, electrokinesis, etc.) Aura Viewing (the ability to view the supposed electromagnetic field around a persons body that is generally associated with mystical phenomena)
Tunnelling - Tunneling is a type of Adept magic, which allows the user to travel through the ground from place to place the only sign of them having been there, a series of cracks Known abilities of someone with tunneling magic are: The ability to sink into the ground and travel underground. The ability to turn walls ethereal so anyone can pass through them. The ability to trap people in walls and floors etc. Immunity to all types of magical bondage. Handcuffs, bound Sanctuary cells etc.
Other - Aside from these disciplines, Adept magic can be used in many different ways. For example, Adepts can make themselves immune to a certain element, however, the opposite element will be much more potent. For example, if a mage became immune to fire, large bodies of water would kill them. Some adepts also have the ability to open any lock and the ability to seal doors by placing a hand on the door and saying "Withstand". Character Sheet: - Code:

Jake involves himself with as much as he can to better fulfil his role as a Sanctuary Detective. He is well connected with most of the local magical communities and generally well liked. History:Born in Sheffield in the UK, Melanie showed her magical abilities at a very young age, coming from an all-mage family, she could develop her talents from childhood, and was encouraged to do so by her family. History: Fionn practically grew up on the streets. He had a home, a small Irish family, but he spent most of his time out and about, running around at night, exploring all the places he could find and tagging it with various graffiti signs. During school he was goofing off, always hanging around with other people, but he did do enough work to pass, barely. Mostly he was studying and learning the uses for Symbols, putting them to practice in ways outside of his teachings. Once he graduated and was free to roam the world, he took the streets and amplified his graffiti with these symbols, turning them into hidden traps and doorways, some being animated slightly to draw attention from passersby and some just to look interesting. | |
